The Austin Apache.

The what?

One of these:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

It was a South African three box version of the Austin/Morris 1100/1300 (there was also a Spanish variant called the Authi Victoria). The eagle eyed who know their old cars will recognise elements of the Triumph 2000/2500 which was deliberate as both were by Michelotti.

Here’s the original:

Kinja'd!!!

Just 20,000 Apaches were made over a seven year period so it can’t have been a particularly profitable venture.

The eagle eyed who know their old cars will recognise elements of the Triumph 2000/2500 which was deliberate as both were by Michelotti.

It was particularly obvious in the case of the Victoria de Luxe, with its quad headlights:

Note that Victorias were all Austins. Authi was the parent company, not a brand.

The nice thing about trying to keep alive any ADO16 derivative is that years ago their umbrella British club had a batch of Hydrolastic displacers remanufactured. No such luck with the h y d r o v e r s i o ns of the Mini. Someone from BMIHT told me years ago that all the tooling for the Mini hydro units seemed to have been scrapped.

This probably would have been the smarter version to sell in the US. It probably wouldn’t have done much better than the Austin America, but it might have done a little better.
